IDD Therapy Spinal Decompression

Specialist non-surgical treatment for herniated or bulging spinal discs and sciatica.

Most back pain and neck pain conditions can be resolved with manual therapy and corrective exercise. However, if pain persists, we provide IDD Therapy Spinal Decompression as part of an advanced programme of recovery. This safe, non-invasive therapy uses computer-directed technology to target the specific level in your spine where there is a problem.

Suitable Conditions:

  • Herniated or Bulging Discs

  • Sciatica or nerve pain

  • Degenerative Disc Disease

  • Facet Joint Syndrome

  • Chronic back pain or neck pain

If you have been diagnosed with a disc problem or are concerned about your back or neck and what to do next, contact the clinic and we can talk you through our options.

Free 15 Minute Consultation: We offer a free 15 minute consultation in clinic if you would like to discuss your potential treatment options.

There is no obligation to have treatment and it is helpful for people who have tried different treatments who are wondering what their options are. If our treatments are not suitable, we can refer you.

What is IDD Therapy?

IDD Therapy is the specialist non-surgical spinal decompression treatment which relieves pressure on targeted spinal discs and gently restores mobility in the affected area.

We have an Accu SPINA machine which delivers IDD Therapy, the gold standard in spinal decompression treatment.

Patients lie on the Accu SPINA table. For comfort and safety the table goes from a vertical position to horizontal. Using a system of ergonomic harnesses, the patient is connected to the machine.

IDD Therapy is computer controlled and a treatment programme is set using specific settings or algorithms.

A series of controlled pulling forces are then gently applied at precisely-measured angles to decompress and mobilise the targeted spinal segment.

In the lower back this is most commonly the L5S1 or L4L5 levels and in the neck C5C6.

Treatment is suitable for the lower back or neck, it is not used to treat the thoracic spine.

We combine the IDD Therapy with some heat therapy before treatment and patients are on the Accu SPINA machine for 25-26 minutes. Treatment is comfortable and many patients go to sleep.

The Accu SPINA has unique treatment features which allow us to both decompress the affected spinal segment and at the same time, mobilise the tissues to help us improve function in your spine.

By decompressing (taking pressure off) an injured or bulging/ herniated disc and gently stretching or working the soft tissues, we can improve mobility in the spine and allow the body’s natural healing mechanisms to operate more efficiently.

The goal is to work stiff ligaments and tight muscles, help the body to retract a disc bulge and to help restore what we refer to as the disc pump.

Intervertebral Disc Health

The intervertebral disc does not have its own blood supply. It relies on movement to draw in fluid and nutrients to remain healthy.

Compression, stiffness and immobility work against this mechanism, especially when there is a vicious circle of pain leading to an impaired ability to move freely.

IDD Therapy was developed to address the failings of traditional traction and limitations of what can be done with the hands. The objective is to decompress the affected spinal level and improve movement in the segment.

We can then create a virtuous circle.

That is where improved mobility and function leads to lower pain levels, leading to better movement and allowing greater activity levels.

IDD Therapy is a gentle but dynamic treatment which is safe, non-invasive and suitable for people over the age of 18.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have had a spinal injection, can I still have IDD Therapy?

Yes. We wait for the effects of an injection to settle and then you can start treatment. We allow two weeks from the injection. Our goal is to avoid the need for injections and surgery.

I have had an MRI scan, what should I do?

If you have an MRI scan, your supervising clinician should give guidance on treatment options. This is often a consideration of whether surgery is appropriate or not.

There are instances where surgery is the necessary route, notably where bladder or bowel control is affected or where there is a level of weakness in the leg or arm.

If there is no recommendation for urgent surgery and where conservative treatment is advised, you can bring your MRI report and scan to the clinic.

The MRI scan will confirm the likely source of the problem. Note, whilst the focus may be on the injured disc, we look at improving overall spinal function.

If a patient has had surgery and there are no metal implants in the spine, we would use IDD Therapy six months after the operation to allow time for healing. If we did not feel your condition was suitable for IDD Therapy, we can recommend other treatments or refer you to appropriate clinicians.

Is IDD Therapy treatment painful?

No. The treatment is computer-controlled and whilst there is a pulling force to unload the disc and mobilise the spinal joints, it is gentle and comfortable. Many patients fall asleep in fact.

Do I need to get undressed?

No. Patients remain fully clothed throughout.

Are there any age restrictions?

Treatment is suitable for patients over the age of 18. This is when growth plates are fully formed. There is no upper age limit although we will assess suitability for treatment on an individual basis.

Will I need a course of treatment?

Yes. Patients have a programme of treatment. We divide the programme into stages of adaptation and progression. Spinal issues that have built up over time leave spinal segments stiff and immobile. Muscles and ligaments which have become weak and inflexible need time to adapt as treatment progresses.

How long is treatment?

You will be in the clinic for up to one hour. Treatment begins with ten minutes of deep penetrating heat to warm tissues. You are on the IDD Therapy machine for twenty-six minutes and we cool the affected area for ten minutes after treatment.

How much is IDD Therapy?

Treatment forms part of a programme and is charged from £70 per treatment. Patients have the option to pay for the programme in one or two stages.

Will the effects of treatment last?

The treatment programme is designed to put patients onto a path of long term healing. As we progressively restore spinal function, the body’s natural healing mechanisms can operate and maintain the spine and this is the route to long term pain relief.

What is the difference between IDD Therapy and traditional traction?

IDD therapy was developed to address the failings of traditional traction to treat targeted spinal segments. Whereas traction delivered a general pulling force to the spine, IDD Therapy is able to focus distraction or pulling forces to a specific level of the spine.

Many problems are located at specific levels and the ability of IDD to focus treatment at the effected level is what separates IDD from traction. It also combines the pulling force with a gentle mobilisation, all part of a process to restore function and allow the body’s natural healing mechanisms to operate.

How long has been IDD Therapy been used?

IDD Therapy was developed in the early 2000s. It was developed in America and is now provided at a national network of independent clinics in the UK as well as in countries around the world.
